Justice Zahid likely to become SC judge

LAHORE - Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sayed Zahid Hussain is likely to be elevated to the Supreme Court (SC). As per sources in the official quarters, serious consideration is being given to elevate Justice Zahid Hussain to the SC, as Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif as senior most judge of the court stands restored to his original position. At the time Justice Sharif was deposed on November 3,2007 through Musharraf PCO, he was second after the then Chief Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry on whose retirement Justice Zahid Hussain got to this office being the senior most. Sources say that Al-Jihad case of 1996 has set the criteria of appointing the senior most as Chief Justice and after the March 16 restoration of judges, the authorities want to adhere to the rule set by this decision. On the other hand, some media reports say, Justice Zahid Hussain in also willing to accept the elevation. Despite attempt, contact could not be established with the CJ to ascertain veracity of the report. LHC seeks reply from Chief Secy Justice Saqib Nisar of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Wednesday called for a reply from Chief Secretary Punjab, Health Secretary, Ministry of Health and others to a petition filed to seek ban on the sale of adulterated milk in the market. The petition, filed by the Watan Party through Barrister Zafarullah Khan, says that on the basis of reports, 80 per cent milk in the market is spurious and unsuitable for human consumption. The petitioner says, the milk even supplied by certain companies contains substances that are pernicious to human health. The petitioner has also presented to the Court the laboratory reports of the milk being supplied to market both in open and packet form for public consumption. It has prayed to the Court for a direction to the respondents to forthwith stop the sale of adulterated milk and that the people may be allowed to keep their own cattle to protect themselves from the consumption of substandard milk. Fisheries to boost economy Chief Secretary Punjab Nagib Ullah Malik has said that fisheries sector has a great potential for further growth, which would help in reducing unemployment and earning precious foreign exchange. He was addressing the inaugural session of 4th National Symposium on Fisheries. He said poverty, unemployment and increasing prices of essential commodities were the major problems of the country. Although economic indicators were in the right direction yet people did not know where to invest their savings. He said fisheries was a dynamic area in this regard, which could increase growth potential of the province appreciably. Speaking on this occasion Secretary Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Major (r) Azam Suleman Khan said fisheries is an important sector of the economy, which provides livelihood to thousands and a high quality protein food to the masses. He said the symposium would definitely prove to be a useful forum for the aqua culturists and researchers to identify the problematic avenues in the fish culture. He admired the role of Pakistan Fisheries Society for the development and conservation of fisheries resources in the country.
