LHC seeks Defence Ministry reply

LAHORE The Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawja Muhammad Sharif while adjourning to May 28 further hearing of the petition against the continuing US drone attacks on Pakistan soil Tuesday directed the Ministry of Defence to file reply. Appearing before the court last day, Deputy Attorney General prayed to the court to dismiss the petition since mover of the same, Khalid Khawja has been killed by the Taliban in custody or keep the same on the hold till any else would come in place of the original petitioner. However, the court deemed it appropriate to continue with the matter in the largest public interest. The petitioner, which impleaded Minister for Interior Rahman Malik, Chief Minister Punjab and Secretary Interior as party, had contended that Pakistan came into being on the basis of Two-Nation Theory as propounded by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah with an objective to let the muslims of this part of the world live their life with sovereignty and according to their faith but the drone attacks are hitting at our independence wherein scores of innocent people are dying. The petitioner has held Obama Administration responsible for the attacks and had urged the court for a direction to the govt to register a case against American authorities in this regard. He had also prayed for an application before the United Nations against the US for imposing a war on the people of Pakistan. The petitioner had also prayed the court to seek production of any agreement if it was struck with America to permit it carry out drone attacks on Pakistani soil and that the government also furnish details of such attacks and the casualties took place therein. He had also sought protection to the life of those affected by drone attacks besides directives to the Pakistani authorities to refrain from holding any meeting with the American officials if they want to deal on the sovereignty of Pakistan.
