Compensation underway, says PDMA

LAHORE - Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi has said that floodwater has caused damage of more than ten billion rupees to infrastructure.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the PDMA DG said that payment of compensation to the heirs of 80 per cent victims, who lost their lives in the flood and rains, has been completed.
Qazi said that the flow of water in Punjab rivers was normal and the administration and concerned departments had started a survey of damage to the houses and crops in the areas where water has receded. He said that the district administration was also continuing drainage of water with dewatering sets from low-lying areas, while medical teams were providing medical assistance to the people of flood-hit areas against viral diseases.
He said that second installment of 350 million rupees to the IDPs at the rate of seven thousand rupees per family would be made before Eid-ul-Azha, while Rs350m were paid to 50 thousand displaced families in the first phase.
Dr Qazi further told that the edible and essential items worth Rs80m had also been sent to the IDPs through 216 trucks.
All rivers in Punjab are flowing normally. According to Cabinet Committee on Flood Relief, the flow of water in river Chenab at Punjnad is 350,000 cusec which will further reduce to 280,000 cusec within next 12 hours.
The repair work of breaches made in the dykes will be completed soon. Rehabilitation work in the affected districts is continuing expeditiously and the committees headed by the DCOs have started assessment of losses.
