Court seeks govt's reply

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought reply for November 10, from the Punjab government to a petition challenging the construction of Benazir Bhuttos memorial in Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi. The petition has been filed by advocate Feroz Shah Gillani against the construction of the monument of Mohtarma Bhutto at Liaquat Bagh at a cost of Rs 1 billion from the national exchequer. Last day, Deputy Attorney General Naveed Inayat Malik submitted a report on behalf of the Federal Secretary Law which said that Benazir Bhutto was a personality of international fame and was a national hero as she died while struggling for democracy till her death and that was why her memorial was being built from the national kitty at the place where she was martyred minutes after a public meeting. The petitioners counsel said Benazir Bhutto was the leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and not a national hero and if the PPP had any desire to make her monument the party should build it with its own funds and not from the national fisc as this money was of the tax payers which should not be spent on memorials. In view of the fact, Liaquat Bagh is situated in Punjab, the court felt it appropriate to know the point of view of the Punjab government on the matter, so it called for a report and comments through office of the Chief Secretary Punjab, on the petition. In his petition the lawyer had also requested the court to remove names of politicians including Ms Bhutto from national assets like Islamabad International Airport, hospitals, government and semi-government departments and other institutions.
