LAHORE - Five persons including two children were killed and 15 others wounded in rain-related accidents in different parts of the provincial metropolis, police and rescue workers said on Monday.
According to rescuers, two children were buried alive while three other members of their family were wounded critically when the roof of a dilapidated house collapsed on them in Mohalla Joiyan inside Bhati Gate.
Resultantly, eight-year-old Ahmed and his four-year-old sister Sumera died on the spot. However, the housewife, Rashida Bibi, her son Sufyan and daughter Salma sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospital. Their condition was reported to be out of danger.
Rescue workers rushed to the spot soon after the incident and managed to pull out the victims from the debris after hectic efforts. Locals said that a labourer, Sadiq, was residing along with his wife and four children in the one-room rented building. The house caved in after heavy downpour on Monday morning.
In another incident, two people were electrocuted in Nawan Kot police precincts. Police sources said 50-year-old Siddique and 20-year-old Omar sustained severe electric shocks after they accidentally touched an electric pole during rain. Both the passersby expired on the spot. The police are further investigating.
Similarly, a 15-year-old balloon seller was electrocuted on the Cooper Road amid heavy rains on Sunday. Police said that Salman, the only son of Shafique Masih, riding on a bicycle was going to sell balloons when an electric wire fell in the rainwater. The boy sustained severe electric shocks and died on the spot.
Later on, the police reached the spot and handed over the body to the family.
According to locals, the accident took place because of the negligence on part of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco). The police have registered a case and are investigating the death.
Also, at least seven persons were wounded when the roof of a mosque collapsed in Sadar are of Lahore Cantonment. The injured were shifted to hospital, where their condition was said to be stable.
Meanwhile, five persons were injured when a multi-storey building collapsed near Shah Alam Market late Sunday night. Rescue workers rushed to the spot and managed to pull out the victims after hours long efforts. An official said the old building was in dilapidated condition which collapsed during rain.
