Top cops regret Model Town tragedy

LAHORE - Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera on Friday directed his department to adopt proactive approach and work independently to avert incidents like Model Town tragedy in future.
Addressing the first formal meeting of police high-command at the Central Police Office, Sukhera directed the police force to follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the operational command without accepting any kind of pressure. A police spokesperson said that the high officials regretted over the Model Town incident during the meeting and also discussed in detail various aspects of the happening.
The IGP said that he never experienced such an untoward incident in his 25-year-long career. He added said that the police must get prepared to meet the future challenges and a strict internal accountability process would be put in place for the purpose. He also made it clear that the performance of policemen would be monitored regularly at all levels and nobody would be allowed to misuse the powers. Proposals regarding the reorganisation of anti-riot force, operational command, regular interaction with the field officers and discipline and training were also reviewed in the meeting. Punjab Additional IG Sarmad Saeed Khan, Additional IG (CTD) Amin Wain, Additional IGs Dr Arif Mushtaq, Rai Altaf, and DIG CTD Muhammad Amir Zulfiqar were also present on this occasion besides other officers.
