Mid-station ordeal for many train passengers

LAHORE (APP) - Divisional Commercial Officer (Lahore) Tariq Latif along with his staff and police allegedly misbehaved and threatened the passengers by stopping three trains at deserted places. On Saturday, an untoward incident happened when three trains 9-Up Allama Iqbal Express, 333-Up Passenger Train and 125-Up Lasani Express were stopped at a deserted place for checking tickets of the passengers. The trains were stopped for more than two hours. When some passengers protested, the DCO allegedly not only abused them but his staff and police also tortured them. The passengers told APP here on Sunday the DCO with the help of police had made a habit to stop trains at any deserted place and insulted even ticket-holders. A passenger, Ashfaq Ahmad, said that trains should be checked but nobody had the right to insult passengers who had tickets. It will create panic and fear among citizens, he added. Nasir, another passenger, said that tickets should be examined by the PR staff and it was illegal and unethical to torture passengers by stopping trains for hours at deserted places. Passengers have demanded the high ups of Pakistan Railways to look into the matter and take the appropriate action. When contacted, Divisional Superintendent Javaid Anwar excused for inconvenience to passengers and said that such incidents would be avoided in the future. He said that surprise checking was necessary and it could only be done by stopping trains at any mid-station.
