LAHORE - PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has appointed a prominent campaigner of his release during his seven years in jail and his spokesperson at the time, Mian Shams, as the partys new Central Deputy Secretary Information after Haider Zaman Qureshi resigned on Monday. He was chief campaigner for the release of President Zardari and led several demonstrations in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi to press the governments of Nawaz Sharif and General Musharraf to free him. The PPP workers from across the country have lauded party decision of bringing Mian Shams to the mainstream. He faced brutal police attacks during the struggle to get Zardari released, it may be noted. Shams wrote to many foreign missions protesting the dismissal of the PPP government and unlawful detention of his boss. Mian Shams also arranged seminars and public meetings to press the then governments to release Mr Zardari. He was also the founding chairman of The Zardari Lovers, a popular shadow organisation of the PPP which championed the cause of Asif Ali Zardaris release. He also formed The Bilawal Lovers to promote the cause of Zardaris release among Pakistani children. Also a member of the PPPs central think tank, Shams led media campaign for his boss release and managed publication of articles in the leading daily news papers of the country. He remained one of the focal persons for designing and implementing campaigns, demonstrations and protests during oppressive regimes.
