Worst traffic mess in City during VVIP movement

LAHORE - City experienced worst traffic mess on Saturday as hundreds of vehicles remained struck for hours on leading roads of the City especially Ferozepur Road and The Mall due to VVIP movement as the Prime Minister and the Governor Punjab spent a busy day in the City. Service lanes and main arteries were witnessed blindly packed with vehicles on Saturday night especially on Lahore Canal Road from Jail Road Underpass to New Campus Bridge, from Ferozepur Road Underpass to Kalma Chowk and on some parts of the Jail Road and The Mall which are known for VVIP movement in the City. The commuters left their vehicles on the roads and exchanged harsh words with the traffic wardens. Traffic wardens were of the view that VVIP movement in the city was the main cause of bumper-to-bumper traffic mess on these roads on Saturday night. Besides a large number of motorists, this time, traffic wardens also strongly criticized the policy of the government to block traffic unnecessarily for VVIP personalities saying that they are facing aggressive and violent behaviour of the motorists. Traffic wardens deputed at Kalma Chowk said that many motorists used abusive language and also exchanged harsh words with them when the traffic was blocked for VVIP movement. When asked, the wardens said that motorists' attitude was natural as many of them were in hurry and wanted to reach their destinations without any delay but they remained struck due to VVIP movement at that time. It is worth mentioning here that Ferozepur Road was also among some other main arteries of the city where bumper-to-bumper traffic mess was witnessed on Saturday night. A car rider Rizwan said that the government was not looking serious towards the motorists' genuine problems. After Karachi, he said, Lahore is the only city, which was experiencing worst traffic mess due to VVIP movement and other reasons. He appealed to the policy makers in the government to give attention to this serious issue otherwise situation will go out of the control within some next years. Motorists should not be blocked unnecessarily 'in the name' of VVIP movement or protocol duties, he demanded. Traffic mess on the main roads of the city especially on the Mall, Jail Road, Lahore Canal Road and Ferozepur Road has become order of the day as traffic wardens have seemingly failed to bring order on roads. Traffic jumbles on these roads usually badly affect traffic on other linked roads also. Another motorist Sajid Basir said that encroachments, illegal parking, faulty traffic signals, growing number of vehicles, narrow roads, slow moving handcarts and mini trucks were also main causes for traffic hurdles. While strongly criticizing the government he said normally the government holds criminal or immoral attitude of the people, businessmen, traders, and Qabaza mafia responsible for hurdles in smooth traffic flow but it did not realize the masses worries during VVIP movement, which is created by the government itself. A motorist Abdul Sattar who was also trapped in the traffic mess at the Ferozepur Road in front of Qaddafi Stadium said that there was no traffic warden at the Qaddafi Stadium signal where road users were struck for 30 minutes. It is also learnt that another major reason behind the traffic jam in the city was the lack of professionalism, as the traffic wardens were not imparted proper training to manage traffic mess in emergency situation. Most of the traffic wardens were witnessed staying alongside the roads like silent spectators.
