'New social contract need of the hour

LAHORE Pakistani society is in ferment and a new social contract is urgently needed to improve the situation of the country. The previous social contract was built around the security of the state, which ignored the first duty of the state to protect the dignity, life, liberty and property of its citizens. This was the upshot of the speakers of a media briefing, held at Lahore Press Club on Monday. The briefing was organised under the banner of Aman Ittehad, a platform of NGOs working for peace in the country. On the occasion, the representatives of Aman Ittehad highlighted the objective of the New Social Contract in Pakistan. Irfan Mufti, convener Aman Ittehad Punjab said that current economic, political and social problems and growing insecurity needed a serious redefinition of states role and its relationship with citizens. He said the basic vision of Pakistan was presented and agreed in 1940 Lahore Resolution had not be implemented in last 63 years hence Pakistan was facing serious threats internally and externally. He informed that Aman Ittehad was organising peoples assemblies in more than 15 cities and roundtable meetings with political parties to get opinion and views on the new social contract that should define states role. Mohammad Tahseen, Khawar Mumtaz, Fatima, Mumtaz Mughal, Hanif Jutt and others also addressed on the occasion.
