Financial constraints hit LWH performance

LAHORE - Female students of King Edward Medical University raised Rs1.55 lakh donations by selling home made food items to run the affairs of Lady Willington Hospital (LWH) the biggest gynaecology hospital in the Punjab, a young doctor told this scribe here on Friday.
The students gathered under the umbrella of Students Patients Welfare Society (SPWS) would purchase paediatric ventilators for LWH with the colleted donations.
It is worth mentioning here that six out of eight anaesthesia machines at the hospital are out of order and for the last ten years no new machine was purchased for the hospital.
The students have established the food stall for four days and it was the last day on Friday when they have collected the said amount.
Female students prepared dishes like kabab, fruit chart, dahi bhalay, Russian salad, gol gappay and other food items for sale on the stall.
A female students seeking anonymity said that customers were only students, doctors and paramedical staff and of course rates were not ordinary but as donation. A student said that SPWS had also done such jobs in the past by installing about 52 ceiling fans in the OPD of Mayo hospital. LWH is the biggest hospital of gynaecology in the Punjab, which is catering the medical treatment of the people across the province.
A doctor said government was paying no heed towards this critical issue. About 100 years old hospital is over burdened and two to three patients were being treated at one bed. When contacted Medical Superintendent of the hospital Afzal Shaheen said that six out of eight machines have completed their functioning age.
He said the management has moved its demands to the Punjab government and the chief minister has approved the PC-I of the case but there was shortage of funds with Punjab government and we were trying to run the hospital smoothly.
No complain was received by the patients so far he claimed. He said that the CM has approved Rs50 millions for the equipment.
