Petition against Taseer dismissed

LAHORE - The Lahore High Court Friday dismissed a writ petition filed against Governor Punjab Salman Taseer for using delaying tactics in filling the post of provincial ombudsman lying vacant for six months. The court remarked that this petition was not maintainable as the petitioner was not an aggrieved person. The petition was filed by president Tehriek-e-Insaniat Iftikhar Hussain who said delay in ombudsman's appointment had caused huge backlog of cases while thousands of aggrieved persons were suffering from distress due to delay in disposing of their cases. The petitioner said governor had withheld the appointment with malafide intention as he had openly stated that he would not administered oath to ombudsman until a PPP nominee is appointed as prosecutor general Punjab. The petitioner said governor was violating the law and be declared the subverter of the Constitution. LHC seeks delinquent cops list The Lahore High Court has sought the list of delinquent police officers who arrested two persons in violation of LHC's earlier order. Justice M Bilal Khan directed SP (investigation) Hafizabad to make sure the presentation of list in the court on November 25. The court passed this order on a habeas corpus petition filed for the release of Mansab and Yousaf. The petitioners' counsel argued that they were nominated in a case however the LHC had restrained police from taking coercive measures against them. But the police arrested them. LHC deputed a bailiff who reported that the both were found from the room of SI Atta Muhammad. The bailiff said the detenues told him that the police had arrested them on November 17 and kept in illegal detention for three days before producing them before a magisterial court on November 20. SP Raja Riaz told the court that he had sought a legal opinion before the arrest and DSP Legal Muhammad Latif advised them that court's November 13 order put no bar on the arrest of both detenues. The court angrily remarked that grave violation of court's order had been committed and all the policemen who helped in the arrest of both Mansab and Yousaf had committed contempt of court.
