DG Khan Development Authority on the cards

LAHORE - The Punjab government is contemplating on a proposal to restore D G Khan Development Authority that was dissolved in 2001.
Another proposal to establish Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) for the city is also under consideration.
Currently awaiting a nod from the chief minister, these development authorities once established would perform multiple tasks and add to the government efforts to develop areas in the south Punjab. Tribal Area Development Project and Management of Hill Torrents in DG Khan are some other projects in the pipeline.
The Dera Ghazi Khan Development Authority was established for development of the areas under Dera Ghazi Khan Development Authority Act 1991.
First, the authority was established under an Ordinance in 1991 but it was then repealed by an Act during the same year, the documents say.
Official sources told this paper on Tuesday that the authority was being restored on the request of PML-N MNA Hafiz Abdul Karim made to the Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
“As CM Shahbaz has agreed with the proposal to restore the development authority in the district besides establishing Wasa, the paper work is under way in the Civil Secretariat” said an officer privy to development.
The Local Government and Community Development department examined the proposal. It will be forwarded to the Housing department, the Law department and then would be forwarded to the Chief Minister for final approval. After the CM’s nod, the DG Khan Development authority will be restored.
Sources said that as the population of the division was multiplied and there was the dire need of the authority to uplift the southern Punjab.
Earlier, the Punjab government had dissolved the Bahawalpur Development Authority (BDA) but it was later restored on political pressure of the local dignitaries.
