LHC CJ takes suo moto notice of police high-handedness

LAHORE - The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court has taken suo moto notice of a police highhandedness of releasing accused who had allegedly committed theft in the house of Deputy Editor, Daily Nawa-i-Waqt. The CJ has referred the matter to Justice Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi for further proceedings on Monday. The CJ has taken Suo Moto on a news item published in Nawa-i-waqt on September 19 in which Aasi has stated that on September 7 unknown person entered his Sabzazar house and took away his son's motorcycle. He submitted an application to Nawa Kot police station for the registration of case against watchman Nazar of adjoining under-construction house. Aasai said Nazar and his son had also stolen a mobile from his house a week ago. He stated that SHO and investigation officer sided with accused persons, however the case was registered. The real drama started when the police produced accused in the court of Saeed Ahmad Awan, judicial magistrate on September 11 for obtaining remand, and the court refused the same on the ground the accused persons appeared innocent from their faces. Aasi further stated that when he tried to know about the order of judicial magistrate, he was informed by the court staff that record of the remand was not maintained by the court. The complainant being disappointed by the conduct of police as well as magistrate has invited the attention of chief executive of the province and CJ for appropriate orders. Justice Ramday elected BoD chairman Deposed judge of the supreme Court Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday has been elected as chairman board of governors of Shalamar medical and dental college. The decision was taken in the first meeting of board of governors of under construction college. Syed Babr Ali, Chaudhry Ahmad Saeed, Mian Muhammad Mansha, Ch Shahid Hussain, Muhammad Munir Ch, Muhammad Naeem and Lt Gen (r) Muhammad Afzal Najeeb attended the meeting. Secretary health Punjab Anwar Ahmed Khan also represented Punjab government. Project director Brig(r) Anees Ahmed also briefed participants about the construction of the project. Conference held Leaders from various walks of life belonging to Christian community participated in the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Conference held under the aegis of Pakistan Masihi League the other day at Bahar Colony, Kot Lakhpat. Prominent Christian educationists, lawyers and church leaders turned up in large numbers at the conference chaired by the League's Punjab President Haroon Rehmat Bhatti. Prominent speakers at the conference included Dr Christi Munir, Dr Kanwal Feroze, Younis Iqbal, central president of League Prof Salamat Akhtar, Fr Nathaniel Ayub, John Shaffaq, John William, Dr Christopher John, Dr William George, Prof Kamran James, Aqeela Naz and Dr Emanuel Khurram. Prof Salamat highlighted the League's contribution in the national politics since 1972 when the party's workers RM James and Nawaz Masih laid down their lives in protest against the government's policy. "Democracy is the only way for Pakistan. We must all strive to strengthen it," he said. Dr Christi stressed on quality education for progress of Christian community and the country.
