Rs 90m embezzlement surfaces in police block

LAHORE - Embezzlement worth millions of rupees has been surfaced in Qilla Gujjar Singh Police Lines project of Punjab Building Department, well-established sources said. Reliable insiders said few big bosses of the Punjab Police Department, Punjab Police Admin Department and Punjab Building Engineers were allegedly involved in the corruption scam. Insiders further claimed even the authorities concerned were unable to asses the massive corruption. However, they told the corruption scam could cross over Rs 90 million in the major project of Punjab Police launched for the district police and other senior police officers. The project was initiated during the period of former CCPO Mohammad Pervaiz Rathore, current member of Punjab Public Service Commission. According to an official communiqu (No-395), with reference to the construction work total Rs 551.10 million were earmarked by the provincial government to construct eight new police stations in the Punjab Capital including PS Garhi Shahu with the cost of Rs 21.73 million, Township 21.89 million, Naseerabad 12.60 million, Ravi Road 12.60 million, Masti Gate 12.60 million and Green Town 21.60 million, Hanjerwal 21.53 million and Liaqatabad with the cost of 12.60 million. The official documents further say about Rs 187.89 million were allocated to the provincial police to construct residential flats for married police officers from grade 15 to 17. Whereas Rs 21.60 million was allocated to build 1286/RFT new security walls along with the renovation of the destroyed residences of officers of grade 18-19 at CCPO office. Moreover, according to the official documents, Rs 65.03 million were earmarked for one hospital and seven barracks for the police officers at Police Lines Qilla Gujjar Singh. The government also released Rs 9.429 million for the construction of the offices of seven DSPs including DSP Wahdat Colony, City Raiwind, Mangamandi, Kahna, Baghbanpura, Mustafaabad and Munawan. According to the statement of a former CCPO Mohammad Pervaiz Rathore, seven residences were to be built for the police officers of grade 20 at Mughalpura Police Station whereas 90 flats for the police official from grade 1 to 10 at Bhubptian Chowk opposite to Pak Hero Motorcycle Factory, Raiwind Road. Now the insiders have exposed the corruption in the Punjab Police building department saying that millions of rupees embezzlement have been surfaced in the construction and renovation of police buildings so far. Seconds after the issue was highlighted, Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Director General Kazim Ali Malik was appointed and directed to initiate an inquiry as soon as possible. A high level committee was also constituted to look into the scam while the same committee will present its report in next week. Sources close to DG ACE Kazim Ali Malik said the DG had also confirmed that a huge embezzlement has been found in the renovation of many police stations' buildings, adding the committee will look into the scam deeply and a strict disciplinary action would be initiated against the culprits. IGP Javed Iqbal did not bother to respond despite the repeated calls by this scribe. Talking to this scribe, CCPO Mohammad Aslam Tareen said an enquiry has been initiated against those involved in alleged corruption scam. "As I know Engineering and Building Department is responsible of construction these buildings and police stations," he added. The CCPO further said this was too early to involve someone because final statement would be established after seeking the findings of the inquiry committee."
