Riots 'engineered' by DPOs and DCOs: PPP

LAHORE - Some PPPs Punjab office-bearers have held PML-N responsible for recent outbreak of violent protests across the province, saying the process of political reconciliation between the two parties may get derailed if Nawaz party did not shun its policy of violence. They also criticised the Punjab government for playing the role of a silent spectator during the violent protests, alleging that they were 'engineered and supervised by concerned DPOs and DCOs under instructions from the Punjab chief secretary. Ironically, the PPP ministers who are part of the Punjab government are keeping mum over the situation unlike office-bearers of their partys Punjab organisation that has lodged strong protest over the recent protests against loadshedding. The PPP ministers are facing the dilemma of not being in a position either to toe the party line or that of the government on the issue. PPPs Punjab President Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan, has come out in the open criticising PML-N and Punjab government, alleging that political forces were behind the protests and strike calls by the traders. Rana Aftab also grilled the Punjab government for playing the role of a silent spectator by not stopping the protesters from taking the law into their hand. Terming it an irresponsible act on the part of government, he demanded quick action against the miscreants who put the train on fire and damaged public and private property. Talking to The Nation, PPPs Punjab general secretary, Sami Ullah Khan said that holding of peaceful protests was right of every citizen, but acts of violence could not be justified in any situation. He deplored the Punjab governments inaction to forestall the situation by holding negotiations with the protesters. He said it was customary that government talks to the aggrieved persons, and later allow them holding of peaceful demonstrations at a specified time and place. But no such step was taken the government, he added. He alleged senior PML-N leaders had visited their home constituencies on Tuesday to encourage traders to make the strike call a success. Senior PML-N leader Khawaja Asifs visit to Sialkot on that day was a case in point, he informed this scribe. Sami Ullah warned if PML-N did not change its policy of facilitating and encouraging the protestors, which he believed were mainly the PML-N workers, it would be difficult to keep the process of political reconciliation between PPP and PML-N on the track. Fearing that terrorists may use the turbulent situation in the province to carry out their agenda, Sami Ullah asked Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to get the things right forthwith by issuing instructions to district administrations to take corrective measures to maintain peace in their respective areas. PPPs Punjab secretary finance, Aurangzeb Burki said it was the responsibility of Punjab government to control law and order situation and to protect life and property of people. He termed the incidents of putting a train on fire and looting of public property in Jhang, Faisalabad and other Punjab cities, an open rebellion against the government and alleged that all this happened under the supervision of the DPOs and DCOs on the orders of Punjab chief secretary. He said the PML-N workers armed with clubs were seem roaming around in different markets forcing the shopkeepers to keep their shutters down, while police chose not to interfere in their business. The police, he added, even did not stop PML-N protestors who blocked important roads by burning tyres, and also damaged private vehicles by pelting stones on them. He termed it an attempt to worsen the situation at a time when troubled regions of Swat and Malakand were returning to normalcy after a long time. Punjab Governments claim of good governance had been exposed after the violent incidents across the province, he maintained.
