LAHORE-The Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz has nominated three ex-members of Punjab Assembly to be taken in the parliamentary committee which is supposed to evolve consensus over the name of caretaker Punjab chief minister in case the leader of the opposition and leader of the house fail to do so.
The opposition leader has nominated Zulfiqar Gondal, Shaukat Mehmood Basra and Ch Zaheeruddin Ahmad to represent the opposition.
The Speaker Punjab Assembly, Rana Muhammad Iqbal has not yet received any nomination from the PML-N side.
The two leaders have one day (today) to agree over one name. But, given the statement of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif that the two names floated by the opposition were not acceptable to him, the matter would surely go to the committee which would have three days to complete the assigned work.
In case, the committee also fails to build consensus over one name, Election Commission of Pakistan would pick one name from amongst the nominees of the government and the opposition.
Raja had recommended the names of Justice (R) Zahid Hussain and that of Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa, former Punjab Chief Secretary.
The chief minister, on the other hand, wants one of his nominees to head the caretaker set up in Punjab.
He has suggested the names of Justice (R) Amir Raza and Khawaja Zaheer, a former federal secretary for the slot in question.
