Diamond Paints victorious

LAHORE - Diamond Paint edged out Learning Alliance by 9-6 in the absorbing final of the Lahore Polo Club Cup at the Aibak ground here on Sunday. Diamond Paints had it all going very easy for them except for Junaid Ahmed of Learning Alliance. Junaid hit all the six goals for his side, and just a little more effort from his team would have been enough to upstage Siamond Paints - a side having veterans Mir Shoaib and Atif Tiwana in its ranks. The match opener from the mallet of Mir Shoaib - a field goal that came off a splendid under-the-neck shot. This was followed by some fowls from the winning side thus giving Junaid opportunity to hit a couple of penalty hits which he successfully converted. The action-packed second chukker saw as many as five goals scored form both sides with two goals apiece coming from Junaid Ahmed and Atif Tiwana from their respective sides. In the chukker-ending minutes, Shahrukh Malik managed to convert a field goal on a pass from Mir Shoaib. It was 5-4 in favour of Diamond Paints by the start of the third chukker and with some lifted performance from Learning Alliance, it could have been a shock defeat for Diamond Paints. But that was not to be, and instead Atif Tiwana jumped into the fray with new aggression. He first hit a field goal, them made it off a 30-yarder. In the fourth chukker, Diamond Paints' Mir Shoaib and Samee Ibrahim scored another two goals to dash any hopes that Learning Alliance cherished by this stage. Hassan Ali Farrukh and Saqib Khan Khakwani officiated the match. Earlier in the subsidiary final, Goodwill thrashed Guard group by 9-6. Asif Tiwana hit a double hat-trick for Goodwill. In the end, chief former president of the Lahore Polo Club and DG Rangers Brig Hamayun Malik gave away the prizes. Teams: Diamond Paints: Shahrukh Malik, Samee Ibrahim, Mir Shoaib, Atif Tiwana.
