Varsity officials absence displeases LHC judge

LAHORE - An election tribunal of the Lahore High Court Tuesday called for the appearance of Controller Examination and Registrar Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) University on November 30 on an election petition earlier moved against PML (N) MNA Malik Riaz. The tribunal has also required the said officials to come along with record pertaining to the BA degree of Malik Riaz, who was elected from NA-118, Lahore, in the last election. The election tribunal comprising of Justice Azmat Saeed was hearing an election petition filed by Asif Hashmi, chairman Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), seeking disqualification of MNA Malik Riaz alleging he was holding a fake BA degree, as such liable to be declared disqualified under article 62 and 63 of the constitution. The petitioner had contested the election on PPP ticket from NA-118 but lost the polls to Malik Riaz. The registrar and the controller examination were earlier directed to appear before the local commission appointed by LHC for giving statement in this case. The court of Justice Saeed was informed last day that the university officials had not yet appeared before the commission for recording their statements on degree of Malik Riaz. The judge expressed displeasure and summoned the officials in person on Nov 30. In the meanwhile, Justice Azmat Saeed summoned the Registrar of Islamia University Bahawalpur in election petition seeking disqualification of MPA Shaukat Manzoor Cheema. Petitioner Ijaz Ahmed Samma has challenged the eligibility of the MPA contending the respondent possessed a bogus BA degree. Previously, the varsity registrar was directed by the LHC judge to appear before a local commission for recording statement but he failed to do the needful. On this the Court summoned him again along with record on the next date of hearing. The same Bench last day adjourned till November 24 hearing of an election petition challenging election of PML-Q MPA Walayat Shah Khagga from PP-220, Sahiwal. Nazar Muhammad Fatyana, a defeated candidate from the same constituency, has filed the petition challenging academic qualification of the MPA. He said Khagga obtained a BA degree from Azad Jammu and Kashmir campus of Al Khair University, which was not a recognised institution by the HEC. On a request made by the petitioner counsel, the court adjourned hearing of the case till November 26, when the counsel would present his submissions in support of his case. On another election matter, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court Tuesday adjourned for today (Wednesday) hearing of a petition which challenged eligibility of PML (N) MPA Khawaja Islam for holding membership in the Assembly on the basis of rigging in the polls. Petitioner Khawaja Ijaz has filed the petition against Khawaja Islam who was elected MPA from PP-72, Faisalabad.
