Police ‘encounter’ leaves two more dead

LAHORE – The City police killed another two alleged robbers in an ‘encounter’ staged in the Kahna area, police sources said on Tuesday night.
Police claimed that two armed bandits riding a motorcycle held up a couple at gunpoint near Chowki Industrial Area and snatched away cash, gold ornaments and valuables worth tens of thousands of rupees. As the couple alerted the police, cops started chasing the bandits.
The policemen signalled two motorcyclists to stop at a picket set up near Gajju Matta when they opened fire on the police. The police also retaliated. As a result, both the robbers were killed during the shootout. Police also claimed that a passerby, later identified as Haji Liaqat, also sustained bullet injuries during the crossfire. He was rushed to a local hospital. The police have removed the dead bodies to the morgue for autopsy.
Both the alleged bandits are said to be 22 and 24 years old, respectively. The identification of the bandits was yet to be ascertained. Further investigations are underway. However, sources said that the two bandits were in police custody for the last several days and the policemen staged a fake encounter to close the chapter of the desperate gangsters.
Meanwhile, the City Police on Tuesday arrested a man who has confessed to the investigators that he slaughtered a 45-year-old rickshaw-driver and dumped his dead body in a house in the Narang Mandi area after kidnapping him from the Hanjarwal area a few days ago.
A resident of Thokar Niaz Baig, Manzoor Ahmed went missing under mysterious circumstance on October 19. His family informed the police and later got registered a kidnapping case against unidentified people.
The police arrested a shopkeeper named Sher Bahadur on the suspicion of his involvement in the murder from the Hanjarwal area and he later confessed to the killing. Sher Bahadur, said to be an official of the Pakistan Rangers who had been dismissed from service, further told the police that he dumped the dead body into the courtyard of his house located in the Narang Mandi area.
The killer took the auto driver, Manzoor Ahmed, to his native town in Narang Mandi, where he slaughtered him. The police have recovered the dead body and removed it to the morgue for autopsy.
