Sheesha smokers cross 5 million mark

LAHORE Sheesha smoking, a new form of addiction, has strongly gripped the entire country in its clutches as it has vastly spread in the Punjab Capital which is hitting hard the young generation especially the students. The senior medical practitioners believed that cocaine, heroine, hashish and marijuana were being used in Sheesha, a bubble-bubble smoking commonly known as hookah, thus it was quite difficult to deny that it had no harmful effects. ANF chairman Col Iftikhar Hussain claimed to have conducted a special survey in collaboration with the teams of senior doctors of Jinnah Hospital in their personal capacity a few months ago. According to our study, over 20 per cent youth, puffing Sheesha, were being converted to use other harmful drugs including cocaine, heroine and hashish, he commented. It is worth mentioning here that TheNation had already quoted a report of Department of Medicine, College of Medicine and Allied Sciences, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which concludes as, Sheesha as well as cigarette smoking, will produce similar harmful effects on the function of ventilatory capacity.
