SCBA to oppose LHC benches in Punjab divisions

LAHORE - Supreme Court Bar Association president Barrister Syed Ali Zafar has said the bar would oppose if the authorities concerned allowed establishment of additional benches in different divisions of Punjab.

“The Lahore High Court is a constitutional court. It has decorum and if additional benches of LHC are established in five divisions then there will be no difference between high court and session courts,” Barrister Ali Zafar told The Nation yesterday.

LHCBA President Rana Zia Abdur Rehman said that the matter was not in his knowledge and soon they would have a discussion. On Monday, a meeting of the LHC administration committee was held to deliberate on the issue of establishment of additional benches in five Divisions including Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and DG Khan.

It was unanimously decided that the matter be placed in a meeting of the Full Court July 15, 2016, which might, if required, continue till July 17.

The meeting also decided that the full court meeting would also consider the question that keeping in view the substantial growth in population with corresponding increase in the volume of work before the courts, whether it is in public interest to recommend to the competent authority under Article 192 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 to increase the strength of Judges of the Court from 60 to 100.
