Riffat drives Balochistan into quarter-finals

LAHORE - Nimble-footed front-runner Rifat Mehdi registered sparkling hat-trick to push Balochistan into quarter-finals of the Fourth National Women Football Championship, currently in progress under sponsorship of Narcotics at Islamabad's Jinnah Stadium. Riffat, all time leading hitwoman of the event with 22 goals, struck thrice as Balochistan outclassed Pakistan Police 4-1 in Group-C play-off to decided the second quarter-finalist from the three-team group. Islamabad clinched the group with two straight wins while Balochistan and Police were tied below them with one point and minus one goal difference. In order to resolve the issue, Match Commissioner Irfan Niazi ordered play-off and Balochistan, who never missed the semi-final of event's history, came out with flying colors. Both the teams earned goals in the first half when jersey number 9 of both teams smashed the ball into net. Rifat opened the scoring in the 29th minute only to see winger Sadia Aslam replied for the Police on the stroke of interval. It was 1-1 at breather. Rifat, who visited Jordan with Pakistan Futsal team two years ago, threw the play-off  from the reach of Police with two goals in the 40th and 57th minute. Winger Shahida completed the rout in the injury time, giving Balochistan convincing 4-1 lead. Seven hat-tricks have been recorded so far. Naima (HEC) was the first one against AJK on 20 August, followed by Diya's International Futsal striker Marium Laghari who did the feat against Punjab same day. Chiniot-born Shaban Kausar (WAPDA) was the third in line on August 21 against NWFP. The impressive Diya's 9-0 victory over HEC on August 22 saw Hajra Khan and Faryal Shah go into hat-trick makers list. Hajra added another on August 24 against AJK, followed by Rifat's feat who managed one double hat-trick and three hat-trick in event's history.
