LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan by September 7 on a number of petitions challenging amendment in Local Government’ Act 2013 and subsequently the demarcation of union councils for the upcoming local bodies’ election in Punjab.
A large number of petitions had filed petitions through their counsels and pleaded that the Punjab government had interfered into the matters of Election Commission of Pakistan by amending the law.
The petitioners stated that the officials appointed by the election commission were not performing their duties and they were dividing the union councils on the basis of their own choice and not on the basis of ground realities.
They requested the judge to set aside the law under which fresh delimitations were being made. After hearing the initial arguments of the petitioners’ counsels, the court sough reply from the election commission.
Meanwhile, Judicial Activism Panel on Thursday filed a writ petition in the Lahore High Court challenging the fee of medical colleges in Punjab.
The Panel filed the petition through its chairman Advocate Azhar Siddique stating that the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council had increased the fee of medical colleges. The petitioner stated that the council increased Rs82,000 for the students aspiring for the admission in medical colleges which had caused serious problems for them. Beside it, the act of the council of increasing fee is unlawful, he further said.
The petitioner prayed the court to set aside the decision of the PMDC about increasing fee.
