US planning major operation in tribal areas, says Imran

LAHORE - Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan has alleged that the US was planning a major military operation in tribal areas before the presidential elections. He was addressing a hurriedly called press conference here on Wednesday. The PTI chief said the Pakistan government should not become a party to the US plans. He said the US was weary of coalition forces' losses in Afghanistan. He said that prevalent peace and no major suicide hits in Pakistan were a result of the negotiations being carried out with the Taliban. He asked the government to refrain from any action against Taliban, which would lead to a break-up in negotiations. He expressed concerns over increase in Supreme Court judges' strength to 29. He maintained that in recently held surveys by Gallup and Terror Free Society, 84 and 93 percent Pakistanis respectively had voted in favour of restoration of judiciary to pre Nov-3 status. He observed the move to increase the number of judges in the apex court was aimed at keeping the majority of PCO judges in the Supreme Court in order to indemnify President Musharraf's acts and to protect the controversial NRO. He said APDM would never approve the action while saying that government's act of presenting the judges clause in Finance Bill was unconstitutional. He announced the APDM meeting would be convened after Pakistan Bar Council's meeting to devise the future strategy. He said the PML-N had maintained a dubious line, as a clear difference existed between its official statements and its actions. He informed that he was meeting Chief Minister Punjab and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif to seek an explanation on PML-N support for the Finance Bill. To a question, Imran said the coalition government's chances of survival were bleak since all the powers rested with Asif Ali Zardari while the responsibilities were of Prime Minister. "If you give power to someone else and the responsibility is of somebody else, the system cannot be run", he said. He advised the government to restore deposed judges through a resolution and then let them handle President Musharraf. To another question, he said there were one million armed men in the tribal region and it was not possible for the military to successfully engage with them in armed warfare.
