Ex-PM to challenge NAB ‘action’ in Gepco case

LAHORE - The counsel of former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Asharf yesterday said that they would challenge the ‘highhandedness’ of the National Accountability Bureau against the former premier before the Lahore High Court as the bureau could not provide detail of accusation against him.

Iftikhar Shahid advocate, the head of legal team of former premier, said that it was a political move to summon Ashraf as he was appointed head of a five-member committee by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to reorganise party in Punjab.

NAB Lahore office summoned former PM Raja Pervez Ashraf to explain his alleged role in “illegal hiring’ with Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco). Former Gepco MD Raja Basharat Cheema was already in NAB custody in this case.

Talking to The Nation, Shahid said it was their legal right that they must be provided detail of accusations by the bureau but, unfortunately, bureau is reluctant to provide any detail.

When asked that the cases against the former premier were lodged during PPP era then how it could be said that the NAB was doing it all on political grounds, Shahid replied that at least there must be any FIR or complaint which should be provided to the accused but the bureau was not providing it.

He further said that the notice issued to Ashraf was ambiguous, silent and unclear that how he was being summoned. As they get documents from the NAB they would challenged it before the LHC, said the counsel.
