Fata war cannot bring long-term peace: Imran

LAHORE - Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan has stressed upon the government to seek a peaceful end to the on-going strife in Fata and Swat. I had offered to mediate between the militants and the government with only one condition that the government would not undermine his peace efforts under US pressure, he stated in a Press release issued here on Saturday. Imran said the Taliban has accepted the mediation offer unconditionally and the ball was now in the governments court. The government has to decide whether it wants a peaceful political solution to the on-going crisis and an end to this madness where brothers have been made to kill brothers in an alien war. Or it wants to continue to serve foreign interests at the cost of vital national security issues that are at stake. He reiterated his earlier offer that he would be willing to travel and take any risk to negotiate a peaceful resolution under the 1973 Constitution. He said once a peace agreement was reached it could be presented before the Parliament for ratification. The PTI Chairman stated that the war in Fata and other parts of NWFP couldnt bring long-term peace and security. On the contrary, the strife has spread from South Waziristan to the entire FATA region and is now in the process of engulfing the entire NWFP. In response to drone attacks in FATA, a wave of revenge terror killings take place in other parts of the country. He blamed the policies of General Musharraf and its continuation by the present government that has produced the present day suicide bombers as none existed before. He stated that mere statements of condemnation by the President and the Prime Minister after every terrorist act while sitting pretty behind fortresses is no comfort for the relatives of the victims of terror or to those mothers who are terrified to send their children to school or those hundreds of thousands of IDPs who have been made homeless in their own country. A policy of peace is the only way forward. Continuation of the Musharraf era policy would only bring more suffering to the people who are already reeling under unprecedented inflation, unemployment, and increasing insecurity. He said it is time to give peace a chance as part of a comprehensive strategy to deal with the security crisis facing the country.
