Protests if blasphemy law amended: Ulema

LAHORE Religious outfits on Sunday expressed their resentment on the proposed amendment in blasphemy law by holding protest demonstrations at Lahore Press Club. The activist of International Khatm-e-Nabuwat Movement, Majlis Ahrar-e-Islam,Pakistn Jamat Ahl-e-Sunnat, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan and a banned outfit Pakistan Sipah-e-Sahaba holding banners, placards and flags of their organisations, chanted slogans against the government. They warned the government that they were peacefully protesting for their demands but they could be turn harsh if they would take them easy. They pledged to sacrifice their lives to protect the honour of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They also warned that attempts to soften the law would trigger nationwide protests. The ulema including Maulana Asad Ullah Farooq, Maulana Younis Hasan, Maulana Khalil, Allama Mumtaz Awan, Mohammad Hanif Rabbani, Haji Latif Ahmed and others while addressing the protesters said Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and we will not tolerate any attempt to amend the Law. They criticised Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs Shehbaz Bhatti and PPP MNA Sherry Rehman as they thought the said leaders had a soft corner towards the blasphemers. They said the government would face a strong reaction if Aasia Bibi was pardoned. They said the government should forget about amending the Blasphemy Law as any attempt in this regard will prove fatal. Some people were conspiring to repeal the Blasphemy Law just to please their foreign masters, they maintained. They announced that they would hold nation wide protests and rallies and shutter down strike would be observed to demonstrate their disagreement on proposed amendment of Blasphemy Law on December 31st (Friday).
