Final chance given to company for compensation

LAHORE - The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a formula presented by Efroze Chemicals, manufacturer of tablet (Isotab) for payment of compensation to heirs of patients died after taking the spurious medicine.
Karachi based, Efroze Chemicals was the manufacturer of “Isotab”, which led to deaths of the cardiac patients who were supplied the spurious medicine at Punjab Institute of Cardiology. Shadman police had registered a case against the administration of the pharmaceutical company. The company’s counsel stated that his clients were ready to enhance the compensation amount from 300,000 to 400,000 each. He said the payment will be made in 24 equal installments with 20 percent down payment.
Heading the three-judge bench Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani observed the court would order the company to pay compensation in pounds (UK currency) but it was not within its jurisdiction to fix the amount. Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman were other members of the bench.
