Lawyers again turn hostile to mediamen

LAHORE - Lawyers of the Lahore Bar Association Tuesday once again turned hostile against mediamen and barred them from covering the court proceedings of maidservant Shazia murder case in which former LBA president Ch Naeem is nominated as an accused. Lawyers blamed media for launching a 'nefarious campaign against its former president Ch Naeem saying that media is exaggerating in the maids murder case. They claimed that she was not killed by her master (Naeem) or any of his family members rather she died by falling from stairs. To give vent to their anger against media, score of lawyers gathered at Cantt Court where police produced Ch Naeem before a magistrate to get his physical remand. They chanted slogans against media personnel and barred them from covering the proceedings of the case. Some aggressive lawyers also tried to expel mediamen from court premises. Some young lawyers also cut camera cables of news channels stopping them from covering the event. Media personnel, however, remained on the court premises in the face of hostile environment but failed to get inside the courtroom as lawyers have made a human chain outside it. The magistrate granted three-day physical remand of Ch Naeem to the police and adjourned the matter till Feb 3. Meanwhile, wife and sister in-law of Naeem, nominated in the FIR, also obtained interim pre-arrest bails from the court of an additional district & sessions judge till Feb 3. Lawyers defending Naeem in the court claim that Shazia had some chronic disease and Naeem used to get her medical treatment by highly qualified doctors. Talking to the media men GA Tariq advocate said Shazia had fungus infection, which caused wounds on her body and also damaged nails. He said Ch Naeem had repeatedly asked Amanat Masih, who got her job, to take the girl back but he was always avoided. In response to last caution of Naeem, Amanat had promised to take Shazia back after Christmas holidays but again he did not took the girl back to her family. On the other side at Civil Court LBA newly-elected President Sajid Bashir also convened general house meeting and the house strongly condemned 'biased reporting by media in Shazia case and vowed to deal media with iron hands. The house also passed a resolution against media and announced to observe complete boycott of courts on Wednesday (today) in favour of accused lawyer Chaudhry Naeem. Previously, the lawyers had thrashed the cameraman and reporters of private TV channels for making and releasing the video of thrashing a police officer by lawyers. LHC restores 17 suspended DSP The Lahore High Court has restored 17 DSPs and Inspectors who were suspended on the charges of having bad repute in the department. Petitioners Allah Yar and others submitted that the department through a notification in 2009 had suspended dozens of police officers declaring them ill-reputed officers. They pleaded that the action on the part of departments high-ups was in violation of fundamental rights as they were condemned unheard. The court allowing the petition observed that the department could not penalise the petitioners merely for having bad reputation unless they were found guilty of any misconduct. However, the court observed that the department might initiate departmental proceedings against petitioners according to the law if there were complaints against them.
