LAHORE - A delegation headed by Chairman Pay and Pension Commission Dr. Ishrat Hussain called on the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at Chief Ministers Secretariat here in Saturday and discussed with him various aspects with regard to increasing pay and pension of government employees. Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Tanveer Ashraf Kaira, Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Finance and Vice Chairman Investment Board were also present on the occasion, who also gave their suggestions regarding pay package and service structure of government employees. While talking to the delegation, Shahbaz Sharif observed in order to induct able and efficient persons in the government service, there was need to revamp the service structure and give attractive incentives. However, there should also be an effective system to gauge their performance, he opined, while adding that corruption was a big hurdle in the progress of a society and there was a need to take comprehensive and solid steps for its eradication. The government is already implementing the policy of encouraging employees showing best performance and attractive incentives are being given to the teachers displaying outstanding performance in education sector whereas recommendations are being formulated for doctors and paramedical staff performing duties in rural and basic health centres so that provision of best medical facilities could be ensured to the people of those areas. Secondly, substantial increase has already been made in the salaries of police and subordinate judiciary, so that they could perform their duties devotedly for providing justice to the people, he observed. Shahbaz Sharif said he had constituted a special committee, headed by Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan, which was formulating its recommendations for inducting maximum people of southern Punjab in the government service and providing better pay package and other facilities. He asked the Commission to formulate special service structure for government employees of backward areas so that they should not feel any hesitation to go in those areas. Although increase in salaries of government employees is essential, yet there is need to introduce such reforms by revamping the whole system due to which not only best facilities could be available to the people but the performance of these institutions could also be improved. An important assignment has been given to Pay and Pension Commission for which it is trying to complete this task efficiently, he said. Earlier, Dr. Ishrat Hussain highlighted various aspects with regard to aims and objectives of the constitution of commission and pay and pension of government employees. Most of the matters, upon which Commission is working, are already being implemented by the government, he said, while thanking various departments of government for extending cooperation to the Commission, and added that the Commission was consulting the provincial governments for increasing the salaries of employees.
