Environ Dept to launch Green Sticker Scheme

LAHORE - The Environment Protection Department Punjab is going to launch 'Green Sticker Scheme across the province with an aim to reduce emission of smoke from vehicles in order to improve environmental conditions. In the first phase of the scheme, the Department mo-nitored New Khan, Premier Transport, Niazi Transport, Daewoo Express and Chenab Transport buses in the City. The data collected by the Department indicates that old, unfit and poorly maintained buses of New Khan, Niazi and Premier transport services are polluting the air which will become a serious health hazard for the general public in future if not addressed. The standard limit for smoke emissions in heavy diesel engine on Ringelemann Scale (a scale for measuring apparent density of smoke) is 40 per cent, carbon monoxide on new vehicles is 4.5 per cent, old vehicles 6 per cent, and noise on sound metre is 85dB-A according to the NEQS values. Departments Director Gen-eral Dr Shagufta Shah-jahan said that the objective of Green Sticker campaign was to differentiate environment-frie-ndly vehicles from other vehicles by issuing green stickers. She further said that the scheme aimed at providing environmental education to the general public regarding harmful impact of pollutants in vehicular exhaust on human health. The DG also pointed out that the campaign would keep improving the air quality index of eight cities including Faisalabad, Multan, Gujra-nwala, Rawalpindi and Lahore. During the campaign, private and governmental vehicles will be checked with the help of instruments and the data of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, noise and smoke emissions will be displayed on the stickers to be pasted on the vehicles to inform the owners about the emission status of their vehicles. Two including cop killed At least two men including a police constable died in two separate incidents in the City on Tuesday. Police investigators said in the first incident, a 29-year-old police constable namely M Hafeez, resident of Baghban-pura, was on his way back to home when his motorbike slipped near FC College underpass. He suffered multiple head injuries as his head collided with the footpath, a police officer said. The locals however rushed him to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. The body however was handed over to his heirs after necessary medico-legal formalities. In another incident, a 60-year-old unknown man was crushed to death by a speedy car in Raiwind City police limits. The deceased, yet to be identified, was crossing a road when a speedy car hit him as a result he sustained severe injuries and died on the spot. However, the car driver managed to escape from the crime scene. Later, his body was shifted to the City morgue for autopsy.
