PML-N, clerks clash mars lawyers' rally

LAHORE - The lawyers' Thursday weekly rally was marred with clashes between the activists of PML-N and All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA) as the former made furious attempts, punctuated with use of filthy language, to stop clerks from chanting slogans against PML-N leadership. APCA was staging a protest demonstration against the price-hike and transfer of three hundred clerks to far-flung areas of Punjab. As APCA rally reached outside the LHC main gate, they started raising full-throated slogans against Shahbaz that irked the party workers gathered there to participate in lawyers' rally. They rushed towards the clerks and caught hold some of them. However, the police intervened at the right time and saved not only the clerks from PML-N workers but averted the situation from getting worse. The policemen stood between both the sides that kept chanting slogans against each other. Ironically, the PML-N activists did not allow clerks to record their protest against their leadership but they themselves were giving vent to their anger against the Punjab governor by raising slogans during the entire rally. However, the APCA rally did not join the lawyers' rally and proceeded to the Punjab Assembly building while holding black flags and chanting slogans against the Punjab government and PML-N leadership. After a while when lawyers reached the spot, the PML-N activists holding huge party flags in leadership of MPA Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman joined them. As far as the lawyers' rally was concerned it was an impressive show as a large number of lawyers took part in it while activists of Jamat-e-Islami, Pakhtoon Khawa Milli Awami Party, Tehrik-e-Insaf, Tehrik-e-Khaksar, and Awami Peoples Party also joined them. The lawyers held the protest rally on the call of the National Coordination Council (NCC), a body to steer the lawyers' movement, to protest against the government for not restoring all the sacked judges. The lawyers of the LHCBA and LBA after holding their general house meetings at their respective bar rooms, taken out rallies from high court and Aiwan-e-Adal Courts. Both the rallies merged at the GPO Chowk and held a joint march to Faisal Chowk while chanting against the government and in favour of sacked chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Meanwhile PTI workers were launching their campaign for party membership by making announcements on a loudspeaker installed on a truck. A group of highly charged lawyers also chanted slogans against the LHC chief justice outside the LHC gate. After reaching Faisal Chowk, lawyers' leaders delivered speeches wherein they pledged to continue their movement till restoration of the chief justice and all other sacked judges. After staying there for half an hour, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
