LAHORE - Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister Rana Maqbool Ahmad has said that all the 196 traffic signals in the Punjab capital should be made operational round-the-clock either by solar or special battery system.
He further said that a project of “camera integrated fines system” would be launched as a pilot project in Lahore to stop traffic rules violations. According to an official handout, Rana Maqbool expressed these views while presiding over a meeting to review the traffic plan for Lahore. Salman Sufi, Senior Member SMU, Secretary Home, Inspector General of Police, Secretary Transport, Secretary Excise & Taxation, Secretary Law, Chairman PITB, Lahore CCPO Lahore and CTO were also present of this occasion.
He also claimed that number of vehicles on roads in Lahore is greater than their capacity and it is estimated that by 2050, at least 150 million cars would be seen on the roads. He also stressed on the need of use of helmets, megaphones, and loudspeakers by the traffic police to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Rana Maqbool also asked the experts to consult private companies for handheld camera integrated fines. He also asked the experts to come up with measurable reforms that would be presented to the Chief Minister to improve traffic system in Lahore.
It was decided that TEPA and LDA must meet and work on traffic engineering. He also urged the committee to work diligently and come up with implementation strategy.
