LAHORE - The Lahore High Court yesterday declared education cess levied on Lahore Gymkhana and other leisure clubs as null and void. The court held that it was double taxing on the citizens.
Gymkhana and a number of clubs filed the petition against Excise & Taxation department for recovering tax in the head of education cess.
Advocate Khwaja Saeeduz Zafar, the counsel of the petitioners, argued that the government was already collecting 16 percent sales tax from the leisure clubs and now the government had starting imposing another tax; it was amount to double taxing.
He requested the court to set aside the tax in the name of education cess.
A law officer, however, opposed the arguments of the petitioner and said that the government imposed the said tax by exercising its lawful jurisdiction.
PU security meeting: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran on Friday chaired a meeting of all deans, principals, directors, chairpersons and heads of various departments at Al Raazi Hall to review security arrangement on campus.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Mujahid Kamran said that Punjab government was taking serious measures to ensure security on campuses. He instructed the heads to keep CCTV cameras functional round-the-clock and ensure strict vigilance within their premises.
He instructed the heads to sensitize students regarding security related matters. Later, the participants offered Fateha for the departed souls of former PU faculty members Dr Khadim Hussain, Dr Saeed Ahmad Nagra, Zubaida Javaid, Prof Sabiha and Madam Riffat.
Workshop: Punjab University Centre for Clinical Psychology organized a training workshop on “Qualitative Research” in which trainee from PhD and MS in Clinical Psychology participated. Clinical Psychologist and Chief Executive Officer MRB Ms. Saima Qamar was the resource person who extended her knowledge among the trainees. At the end of the workshop Director CCP Prof Dr Ruksana Kausar extended her gratitude to the resource person for sparing her specious time to disseminate her expertise to the participants.
