Protest against privatisation

LAHOREThe Railway Workers Union (RWU) Open Line held a protest demonstration outside the Railway Headquarters on Tuesday against the proposed privatisation of the Pakistan Railways (PR). They said the nonpayment of salaries at time and unavailability of medicines from the Railway Hospital had become a permanent problem for the workers. The demonstration, led by RWU Lahore Division General Secretary Akbar Ali Khokar, Manzor Razi, Rao Naseem, Asiq Hussain and others was attended by a large number of railway workers. Earlier, the protest demonstration was joined by scores of workers in the shape of rallies from Railway Station to the headquarters. The speakers alleged that the Railways management had destroyed the organisation and was creating a situation so as to force privatization. They said the managers drawn huge salaries while workers were being fired, subjected to insecure contact work, deprived of the facilities. They said that if the management did not act upon their demands they would continue their protests. Iftikhar 28/12/10
