Labourer dies in roof collapse after downpour

| More rains forecast

LAHORE - A 45-year-old factory worker died while three others were seriously wounded when the roof of a steel-manufacturing unit collapsed in Baghbanpura due to heavy downpour yesterday.

Police sources said that Babar Younis died on the spot while his three colleagues were shifted to a hospital with multiple injuries. Rescuers said the factory workers were buried under heavy machinery as the roof of the steel mills collapsed near Sukh Nahar.

According to locals, the roof caved in during the downpour late Monday night. The rescue workers pulled out the injured from the debris after hectic efforts. They were shifted to a nearby hospital immediately. The police are investigating the incident.

Parts of the country including Lahore received rainfall of varying intensities with experts predicting more monsoon rains during the next couple of days.

Rains/dust-thundershower accompanied by strong gusty winds occurred at scattered places in Punjab, Islamabad, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, Quetta, Kalat, Sibbi, Sukkur, Larkana divisions and Kashmir.

According to the experts, seasonal low lies over north Balochistan with its trough extending eastwards. Monsoon currents are continuously penetrating and likely to continue during next couple of days. A westerly wave is lying over Afghanistan, western border of Pakistan and likely to persist during next 24 to 36 hours.

Meteorological department has forecast rains/dust-thundershower with isolated heavy falls accompanied by strong gusty winds at scattered places in Balochistan (Quetta, Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Makran divisions), Lower Sindh, upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal divisions), Islamabad and Kashmir during the next couple of days. Rains are also expected at isolated places of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Bannu, DI Khan divisions), FATA, South Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.

On Tuesday, Sibbi received 63mm rain, Faisalabad 49mm, Shaheed Benazirabad 40mm, Joharabad 30mm, Khanpur 28mm, Rohri 26mm, Okara and Malamjabba 25mm each, Murree 19mm, Balakot and Saidu Sharif 16mm each, Kakul 15mm, Lahore 14mm, Sahiwal, Sargodha and Mianwali 13mm each, Bahawalnagar and Larkana 10mm each, Parachinar 09mm, Kalat and Noorpurthal 08mm each, Chakwal 07mm, Bhakkar and Muzaffarabad 06mm each, Gujrat 05mm, Khuzdar 04mm, Zhob and Gujranwala 03mm each, Murree, Garidupatta,Cherat and Badin 02mm each and Sialkot, Kalam and Kotli 01mm each.
