LAHORE - The precious academic year Bahauddin Zakriya University students will not let go wasted, Punjab Education Minister said yesterday.
“The precious academic year of will be saved by granting the status of college to Lahore Campus of Bahauddin Zakriya University if the problems will not be resolved. Punishment will be awarded to the elements responsible of irregularities in setting up of the campus, however, boy and girl students are not guilty in this matter,” he told the media.
He said that all out measures are being adopted for resolving the issues of Lahore Campus. On the directives of Chief Minister, a committee comprising senior officials was constituted over the matter.
Rana said the Punjab government was paying due attention to higher education.
He said that 37 new degree colleges are being set up throughout the province whereas provision of missing facilities in existing 58 colleges is in the basic agenda of the department of this year. Replying to a question, the minister said that the CM Punjab has allocated a huge amount of 21 billion rupees for completion of Lahore Knowledge Park which reflects his interest in the promotion of higher education.
Earlier this month, hundreds of students took to the streets against cancellation of affiliation with BZU Multan. They alleged the administration of university established such bogus campus of BZU for deceiving the students and minting money.
The students disclosed that scam unearthed last week when NAB arrested former vice-chancellor of BZU Khawaja Alqama for an alleged embezzlement of millions of rupees.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, took notice of the issue and directed the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to probe the matter on priority basis. He also directed the commission to submit the inquiry report as soon as possible.
