LAHORE - The Punjab University Syndicate in its meeting on Saturday penalised Institute of Chemistry Professor Dr Zaid Mahmood with forced retirement under Peeda Act for plagiarism.
The 1706th meeting was presided over by PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran at committee room of VC office.
In 2011, a professor of Institute of Chemistry had filed complaint against Dr Zaid alleging him that he had plagiarised research articles. An inquiry committee found that most of the material was plagiarised.
In the last five meetings of the syndicate, the plagiarism issue was discussed at length. In the 1705th meeting, the syndicate decided to serve show-cause notice to Dr Mahmood under Peeda Act and awarded him with the opportunity of personal hearing in the next meeting.
On Saturday’s meeting, Dr Mahmood appeared before the syndicate members in person but could not defend his case.
The syndicate also granted ex-post facto approval to Independent Disciplinary Committee, constituted in 2010, and its recommendations.
The committee was constituted to hear appeals of candidates against the decisions of unfair means cases committee. The syndicate also granted ex-post facto permission for re-consideration of appeal of Syed Abdul Qadir Gillani regarding restoration of his BA result quashed due to unfair mean case.
Moreover, the Syndicate gave approval for holding a new inquiry into Gilani’s case to review other allegations. The Syndicate approved the proceedings of Academic Council and Finance and Planning Committee. The meeting also approved appointment of various heads of departments.
