25,000 books sold at GCU fair

LAHORE - Over 25,000 books were sold during the three-day book fair held at the Government College University Oval Ground under the auspices of its Library Society.
On the third day, a large number of delegations from various Punjab public libraries, schools, universities and affiliated collages visited the Book Fair offering up to 55 percent discount and purchased books on various subjects.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khaleequr Rahman said that the grand activity of book fair was well organised and managed by students i.e. the office-bearers of GCU Library Society. However, he said, the university administration just monitored, guided and supported their students.
He said the book fair was mainly organized for the university students, affiliated colleges and invited guests, but they have to grant permission to several delegations from other educational institutions and libraries on their repeated requests. “It seems that there is scarcity of such activities in the City,” he said, adding that all universities, colleges and schools in the country should hold at least one book fair every year.
The vice chancellor said that response from students towards GCU book fair was really encouraging. He said that designated teachers from all departments were remained present at the book fair to guide the students in their selection of books. The GCU academic departments also purchased latest books on their relevant subjects out of their annual budget from the Book Fair to make them available to teachers and students.  Prof Rahman also expressed gratitude to the publishers for honoring his requests for increasing discounts on various books.

He laid a stress on rejuvenating the culture of gifting books in the society to promote book reading.
GCU Chief Librarian Abdul Waheed said book fair had become annual feature of GCU and such activities must be organised continuously in all universities, so that students could purchase maximum books on discounted rates. He said publishers were also happy as they sold more than 25,000 books in just three days at the GCU book fair.
