Protest against newborn abduction

LAHORE
Dozens of people staged a demonstration outside the Ganga Ram Hospital on Monday evening against the abduction of a newborn from the hospital’s nursery ward some four days ago.
The protesters, mostly family members of the baby, blocked the road by setting the tyres on fire. The club-wielding protesters also chanted slogans against the police and hospital administration, demanding the authorities to recover the baby at the earliest.
The road blockade caused worst traffic mess in the densely populated locality. The police diverted the traffic flow to the adjacent roads which further multiplied the miseries of the motorists. The police also blocked the road leading towards the hospital.
Meanwhile, senior police officers reached the spot and managed to disperse the protesters after holding a series of negotiations with them. They also assured the protesters that investigations are underway to unearth the criminals involved in this heinous crime.
The Civil Lines police registered a case against an unidentified woman who allegedly kidnapped the baby boy from the nursery department of the hospital on September 24.  Sumera Bibi, mother of the baby, told the police that the possible involvement of hospital staff in the incident could not be ruled out.
The kidnapping of newborn from the nursery departments of public hospitals is not a rare incident. In July 2013, a newborn was abducted from the nursery ward of the Lahore’s Jinnah hospital.
