Fourth office for MD Waste Management Co

LAHORE - Cash-strapped Punjab Government has offered Rs 30 million loan to Lahore Waste Management Company, enabling Managing Director Waseem Afzal to acquire costly office at Egerton Road on rent, sources informed The Nation on Friday. The Punjab Finance Department has asked State Bank of Pakistan to transfer Rs 30 million to LWMC for its establishment and adjust the said amount in the accounts for 2010-11. The Punjab Government has provided loan to the LWMC for its non-developmental expenditures and interestingly that too without settling terms and conditions regarding interest rate and schedule of return of the borrowed money. Instead of purchasing modern equipment or providing training to the manpower, MD of the Company Waseem Afzal went for taking 600 square feet office in the heart of the City at half a million monthly rent. As such out of Rs 30 million borrowed amount, Rs 6 million will be consumed in payment of office rent during the fiscal year 2010-11. Interestingly, MD has already three offices, at Jinnah Hall, DCO office and at Jane Mandir. There was no need of taking another office on rent as there were already three offices on the disposal of MD. After taking another premises on rent, now MD has four offices in the City. Now only Punjab Chief Minister has more offices than the MD, said an official at the Solid Waste Management Department on the condition of anonymity. In is to be noted that the City District Government has decided in principle that no office will be taken on rent during the fiscal year 2010-11 to reduce non developmental expenditures.
