PML-N remodels strategy for NA-68 by-election

LAHORE The PML-N has reshaped its strategy for the upcoming by-poll in NA-68 Sargodha after losing PP-34 in the same district. The partys high command is also expected to take disciplinary action against those rebels among the PML-N ranks that ditched the partys candidate in PP-34 by-election, The Nation has learnt. The PML-N sources which are part of the party candidates by-poll campaign in NA-68 Sargodha told this scribe on Friday that following the directions of the N-League high command they met with several estranged local leaders and workers of the PML-N, to get their support for Shafqat Baloch, PML-N contender from NA-68. They claimed that they succeeded in bringing back the angry local cadres to the party ranks. The sources revealed that top leadership of the party had assured them of taking disciplinary action against the dissidents, however, this action would be taken after the NA-68 by-election. They claimed that they had proposed to partys high command that disciplinary action against the dissidents and their expulsion from the party would only serve the purpose of boosting the morale of party cadres in District Sargodha. They asserted that they succeeded in grabbing the support of some local leaders of the PPP, the PML-Q and the Jamaat-e-Islami keeping in view the important role of the said parties in PP-34. However, local leaders of the said three parties rejected the claims of the PML-N leaders, adding that they would support independent candidate Mazhar Qureshi in the by-poll scheduled for August 5. The leaders of PML-N District Sargodha are laying great emphasis on several small pockets of votes in NA-68 as they can play a major role in success of any of the candidates, the PML-N sources maintained. They were of the view that PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharifs public address in NA-68 would also prove vital to secure this seat of the national assembly. They claimed that they had already appealed to partys high command for the PML-N Quaids visit and public address in NA-68. Meanwhile, some old political guards in NA-68 were of the opinion that results of this by-poll would be similar to that of PP-34, as several small local vote pockets were still weighing their options. PML-N member provincial assembly, Shahzadi Umerzadi Tiwana, Khawaja Nizamud Din, Haji Ashraf Kalyar, Munir Qureshi, Ilyas Qureshi and Farakh Javed Ghumman are campaigning for Shafqat Baloch while PML-N MNA Javed Hasnain Shah de-seated from this constituency for holding bogus degree is not taking an active part in the campaign. Independent candidate Mazhar Qureshi is being backed by the PPP, the PML-Q and the JI. Tasnim Qureshi, State Minister for Interior, PML-Q MNAs Anwar Ali Cheema and Ghais Mela and JI leaders have been running his election campaign. It may be mentioned that the PML-Q had withdrawn its contender, Aslam Kalyar from NA-68 in favour of Mazhar Qureshi sometime back. The clans residing in NA-68 are Bhatti, Kalyar, Baloch, Qureshi and others while Bhatti and Kalyar clans possess major vote bank in the constituency that is comprised of eight union councils. Veteran local leaders were of the opinion that the vote of Bhatti, Kalyar, Baloch and Qureshi was likely to be split 50/50 in favour of Shafqat Baloch and Mazhar Qureshi and small pockets of votes consisting of other clans would play a decisive role in success of any of the candidates from NA-68.
