This is apropos of 'Its tip of the iceberg, in the Readers Column by Mr Asmatullah Khan on October 30, 2010. Thank you very much for informing the main stakeholders who are the parents and students about the situation going on in the universities of KPK. May I mention a few points apart from nepotism in appointments by authorities of the University of Peshawar (UOP). The controller of examination, of the UOP always remains the external examiner of the MBA theses of the affiliated institutes. Each student is charged Rs 2400 as thesis examination charges in which the external examiner gets Rs 1200. The students are not given any receipt for this money. The affiliated institutes are Edwards College Peshawar, Brains Postgraduate College to mention a few. Recently, the University of Peshawar bought a dozen brand new cars and gave mainly to those members of the mafia who have almost no contribution to the finances or research of the university. This is just to keep the mouths of some people shut not to criticize the administration for their wrongdoings including induction of their relatives in the universities. Months ago, due to the pressure from Higher Education Commission, the university collected attested copies of degrees/certificates from faculty members and members of administration for verification purposes but till now the degree holders are not informed back about the result. The reason is that some influential employees are believed to have fake degrees and the administration is protecting them. That is why the process is delayed. Shamshad Khan, Islamabad, October 31.
