Supreme Court and Wapda

As per press reports printed on Nov 1, the Supreme Court ordered the initiation of cases against corrupt officials of Pakistan Railways responsible for destroying the organisation and directed sending the cases to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The court directed Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq to take complete information about corrupt officials of the Pakistan Railways involved in selling scrap on lower rates and then send their cases to NAB. The court also asked the attorney general to send the cases of officials to NAB who were involved in purchasing electricity bulbs of Rs 7 for Rs 400. It was heartening to note that Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered against prevailing widespread corruption in Pakistan Railways. I request the Chief Justice to order a similar type of action against high level embezzlement prevailing in Wapda. The two Prime Ministers Gilani and Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had already called it White Elephant. I may point out as per press reports Auditor General has recently presented a report about Wapda to the National Assembly showing Rs 90 billion embezzlement in only one year. This is not first example of corruption in Wapda that is rightly treated as mother of all corruptions. There is a long list of corruption cases in Wapda for the last many years but they have obviously full protection from bureaucrats working in concerned ministries in Islamabad particularly Ministry of Water and Power. I request Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo motto action against high level corruption, embezzlement and misappropriation cases in Wapda, in the greater interest of people and country and give exemplary punishment to culprits if proved guilty. MOHAMMAD KHAN SIAL, Karachi, November 1.
