Glorifying itself

After hosting the Benazir Bhutto Gold Cup Women's Hockey Tournament in February this year, Pakistan Hockey Federation is now hosting the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto All Pakistan Gold Cup Men's Hockey Tournament in Islamabad that is due to start from 14th of October. The tournament will feature departmental and provincial teams from all over Pakistan. Such domestic tournaments are certainly a positive step for promotion and development of the sport in the country. However, it is regrettable that the Federation has chosen to name the tournament after PPP's late chairperson when it could very well have been named after one of the many great Pakistani hockey players of the past who won international laurels for this country. But then again, it is only just as questionable a choice of name as Prime Minister's 2008 decision to rename Islamabad International Airport as the Benazir Bhutto International Airport and Rawalpindi General Hospital and the Murree Road, which are now called Benazir Bhutto Hospital and the Benazir Bhutto Road respectively. That these names serve as a mark of reverence and a recognition of her services to the nation is indeed a noble idea. But do also consider the fact that hockey, once our national sport, is now in dire need of some promotion. It would have been far more appropriate to name the tournament to honor those who have done something for the sport instead of using it to glorify someone who has been already glorified a lot by her political party that also happens to be in power. -MOHAMMAD ZOHAIR HASSAN, Lahore, October 5.
