President orders emergency steps

I refer to The Nation’s headline – ‘Zardari orders emergency steps to tackle power crisis’. He would not be saying this every few weeks if Benazir Bhutto had not rejected Kalabagh dam and opted for the oil guzzling IPPs. Even now better sense should prevail that only mega dams can give us the quantities of power and water that we need. Kalabagh dam can give us both within five years. Bhasha dam will be too little too late, at best a replacement for Mangla and Tarbela dams which will have lost considerable capacity for storage and generation by then. The rulers are sleeping while the country is coming to a standstill.
