In the eye of the storm

It hurts me to hear threats to the Pakistani nation. The situation became more ominous after tragic death of Benazir Bhutto. Last winter ANP was openly threatening that if NWFP was not renamed as Pakhtunkhawa Pakistan would break. Others are now warning that if the country is not divided into two or more provinces as per their wish, the federation will be destabilised. Whilst some regional political players threaten that if a particular dam was built / not built the country would break. Last week Prime Minister Gilani warned that if the PPP government fell it will harm democracy and the country would break. Earlier this week Law Minister Babar Awan while addressing Karachi Press Club also warned that if PPP-led government was harmed it will destabilise federation. In other words their type of PPP democracy was more sacrosanct than the country itself. Threatening break-up of the country seems to be the last resort of some self-serving politicians. The ruling elite should not forget that without Pakistan they would not be able to enjoy such high positions of power, prestige, privileges, perks and what not. With due respect, may I know what have they given to Pakistan in return? Nothing Pakistan is not a fragile little piece of cotton wool. BASHIR A. MALIK, Lahore, October 6.
