Nato supplies

According to a report by Maqbook Malik (April 11) the government seems to be all set to restore Nato supplies and has decided to get the redrafted resolution passed by a majority vote in case of absence of consensus. One would think that on a matter of such importance which will bind Pakistan to a certain course of action for decades to come, the requirement should have been at least a two-thirds majority, in case full consensus cannot be achieved which would be nearly impossible to get anyway. If passed with a simple majority, it would be seen purely as a government decision and termed a sell-out.
It is reported that our officials are not too hopeful about getting an apology from the US as also the punishment to the killers of 24 of our soldiers. Quite recently, it was reported in the press that the US authorities have decided not to initiate action against the persons involved in the deliberate unprovoked attack on our post, which was another uncalled for provocation. Looks like our people wish to remain in the good books of the Americans no matter what it costs to the nation. Recently, the head of the US Central Command, General James Mattis and the US commander of Nato troops in Afghanistan, General John Allen, who bears primary responsibility for the killing of our soldiers, visited Pakistan and through the over-courteous treatment that they might have got in Pakistan, they must have concluded that our people are not too serious about the apology or the punishment to culprits.
As for our demand to end drone strikes, it is reported that the US was not ready to give up its weapon of choice. I remember Americans were just as adamant about the American-led night raids in Afghanistan but they had to bow down to strong Afghan demands and have agreed to Afghan control and command of the night-raid teams. Of course, we are different. We might rejoice and celebrate Americans' agreement to reduce frequency of drone strikes and to share the intelligence with Pakistan over high-profile targets, regarding it as a great victory scored over super-power America.
