IRI's hero

This refers to Mr. Zaheer Aghar Khan's letter titled "Sherry on the prowl" (The Nation, January 11, 2009). The writer has taken exception to an alleged statement of Ms Sherry Rehman in which she is said to have recommended action against those who indulge in rumour mongering against the government. I think a government that has been elected by the people through a popular vote cannot even think of undertaking such an action. Ms Sherry Rehman's credentials in the struggle for democracy are well known and have been further corroborated since by the title of 'Democracy's Hero' that has been awarded to her by IRI. I very much doubt Ms Rehman could have made such a statement. Democracy is about accepting people's disparate views and that is why it is called diversity in unity. Let us not get bogged down in slander. -ABDUL RASHID, Multan, January 10.
